From our Guidance Department:
Hello Elementary School Students and Families,
We hope that this letter finds all of you healthy and safe. We are missing all of you very much and look forward to seeing all of your smiling faces again very soon! Our department is working diligently on ways to provide support for our families during this difficult time. If your child has a counseling need or if you as a parent/caregiver have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact either of us. Together, we will find supportive ways to work with your child during these transitions. Our students and families are very important to us, and we are “walking with all of you.”
Moving forward, we will be providing virtual opportunities for your child to connect with both of us. The staple of our Elementary School Counseling program has always been offering student groups, teaching classroom lessons, and offering student lunch bunch opportunities. These opportunities will help support your child’s academic, social, and emotional development through these ever changing times. More information on how your child and family will be able to access these daily opportunities will be forthcoming from our office. Please keep an eye out, for these fun opportunities that will begin within the next week.
As school counselors we want to encourage you to:
- Keep calm.
These trying times can be stressful for everyone, including kids. They pick up on everything from adult conversations around them to the information they encounter on the media. Remember that panic only creates more panic.
- Listen and be supportive.
Being a good listener is key. Help your children communicate their feelings and remind them it’s okay to feel sad, mad, afraid, or confused. It’s important to meet your children where they are and to answer their questions and to address their concerns.
- Be honest and accurate.
Talking about the facts that we know helps to relieve anxiety.
- Emphasize safety.
Reassure your children they are safe. Doctors, scientists, and teachers across the county are working on this and doing everything possible to protect us and keep all of us safe.
- Encourage healthy habits.
Give your children instructions on how to stay safe and healthy. Review and model basic hygiene and healthy practices for protection.
- Limit social media.
Your children may be scared of the things they’ve heard or seen on television or social media. Monitor and limit social media and screen time to prevent your children from becoming over saturated with all of the messages. Do fun things, if possible!
- Enjoy quality time together.
Some family activities to do at home include: reading books, practice counting things, doing puzzles, building forts, going on walks, playing outside, painting, playing with toys and Legos. Whenever possible, children benefit from choices—give them choices daily.
Simply put, just spend time together!
Take care and stay healthy,
Mr. Dennis Gates Mrs. Kelsey Andres
